Carnival Cruise Line guide: Everything to know about ships, itineraries and more

how many people are on a cruise

During the evenings, there is an official dress code, but it's pretty laid-back. Most nights are designated "cruise casual," which means just that — khakis or jeans, polo shirts, sundresses, etc. Super casual items such as cutoff jeans, men's sleeveless shirts, T-shirts and gym shorts aren't permitted. Note that you'll be charged a $15 corkage fee if you want to bring the wine or Champagne to an onboard restaurant or bar to drink. Carnival allows you to bring one bottle of wine or Champagne per person onto ships at boarding plus up to a dozen standard cans or cartons of nonalcoholic drinks such as sodas.

The Ratio: Passengers to Crew

You'll find at least one of its ships sailing out of pretty much every major port city around the country. In 2020 an increased number of crew members committed suicide during the coronavirus crisis. In may 2020,  5 crew members committed suicide on board cruise ships.

These days, over 40,000 pints of milk are brought on to a cruise ship for a two-week cruise. To produce that amount of milk in two weeks would require 25 dairy cows. According to the latest state of cruising report by the Cruise Line International Association, around 36 million passengers are expected to embark on a cruise in 2024. The only time capacity may genuinely be an issue is with entertainment and specialty dining. These two areas, determined by popularity, may require reservations to be made in advance to secure your spot.

The top decks of Carnival vessels are covered in family-focused attractions – pools, waterslide areas and bustling fun zones with such draws as ropes courses and miniature golf. Every Carnival ship has a casino, usually smack in the middle of the main entertainment deck. Carnival is also well known for the Punchliner Comedy Clubs on its ships, which draw quality comedians and can get a little raucous late at night with adult-only performances. Every Carnival ship has one big theater where you'll often find flashy, fast-paced production shows that string together a medley of loosely related tunes. Designed to be quick and digestible, they typically last around 30 minutes and have relatively small casts (just eight on some ships). The latter venue was created in partnership with Food Network's Guy Fieri and serves a free lunch on embarkation and sea days, with all items smoked on board.

Cruise Lines International Association cites that in 2019, 29.7 million people went on a cruise. The "full" cruise ship passenger capacity is based on double occupancy (2 guests per cabin). The cabin's capacity varies according to stateroom's type, category, and also by line and ship.

What are the biggest global cruise markets?

Not all ports can accommodate mega-ships due to size or depth restrictions. Cruise lines carefully plan itineraries to ensure ships dock at suitable ports, often investing in port infrastructure development. To further boost onboard spending, cruise lines frequently offer promotions, deals, and packages.

So is there a website that tells how many cabins have been booked/remain available? But I'm guessing that even if there were, naming the site would be against the rules. I've even considered just going to a booking site and tallying the available cabins but I think I read somewhere that all the available cabins aren't listed, only 15 at a time or something. Cruise lines such as MSC Cruises and Costa Cruises mainly target the European continent in particular, and you'll find large swaths of people from all across Europe on their ships. The most important key figures provide you with a compact summary of the topic of "Cruise industry worldwide" and take you straight to the corresponding statistics.

We also enable travelers to visit bucket-list destinations such as national parks and UNESCO World Heritage sites. Small ships also mean smaller groups and a better chance of having the experience you want. Whether you love nature, history, culture, food or art, we can help you create your dream voyage. A small cruise ship provides a much different experience than a large one.

The current champion is Icon of the Seas, boasting a jaw-dropping gross tonnage of 250,800 GT. This maritime marvel stretches over 1,198 feet and can accommodate 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew members. Before Icon of the Seas claimed the title, it was Wonder of the Seas and then Symphony of the Seas that wore the crown, each setting remarkable benchmarks in terms of size and amenities. Passenger accommodations play a crucial role in determining capacity, with options ranging from inside cabins to luxurious suites.

On a small ship, staff members don’t have as many guests to serve, and they can provide personalized service. There was a time when Carnival operated some of the biggest cruise ships in the world. The majority of people who die on cruise ships do because of natural causes. Common causes are strokes and heart attacks as these strike quickly with little warning. People don’t send to board cruises if they have ongoing serious medical problems that aren’t well managed.

The two venues have flat fees of $49 and $24 per person, respectively. Maybe you'll drink a little too much, eat a little too much, play a little too much — but in the end, you'll say it was your best trip ever. Occasionally, Carnival will deploy a ship to Europe for a few weeks or months. This often takes place when a vessel needs to go to a European shipyard for an overhaul. Carnival ships are all about fun in a very laid-back, unpretentious, nothing-too-fancy sort of way. Indeed, if you're going on a Carnival cruise, the odds are you're driving to the ship, not flying, and you're probably not paying much more than you would for a trip to a local beach town.

Can cruise ships tip over or sink?

can a cruise ship tip over

This includes understanding weather patterns, navigation techniques in rough seas, and the use of stability control systems. Modern-day cruise ships are designed to withstand rough weather conditions, including rogue waves, which happen from time to time. Cruise ships are built with stabilizing systems that help to keep them upright during storms. Overall, ship design and weight distribution are crucial elements in maintaining the stability of cruise ships. This ensures that passengers can enjoy a smooth and safe journey, no matter the weather or the sea conditions.

Have Cruise Ships Ever Tipped Over in the Past?

Modern cruise ships rely on advanced and sophisticated safety mechanisms, including stability control systems. They are also designed to have extremely low centers of gravity, which may seem surprising given the enormous scale of today’s cruise ships. Even a large mass, like a cruise ship, will stay afloat due to the principle of buoyancy – the mass is equal to the upward pressure of the water. To minimize rocking, it keeps a low center of gravity by keeping heavy equipment below deck and using ballast tanks.

Cruise Ships Are Designed for Stability and Smooth Sailing

Cruise ships also have stabilizing fins extending from the ship’s side, which help reduce the ship’s rolling motion, especially in rough seas, creating a more enjoyable experience for guests. A wave crashing against the side of the ship is way more dangerous because they can easily turn the vessel over. Cruise ships are equipped with special stabilisers that prevent them from tilting to one side too much, but they don’t help with pitching- front to back movements.

Modern Stabilization Systems

Cruise ships also continually train their crews in emergency preparedness. Crew members are well-versed in procedures for incidents at sea, including potential capsizing. Advanced weather monitoring systems on board allow for early detection of storms, which the crew can navigate away from or prepare for, diminishing the likelihood of extreme tilting or tipping. These incidents are exceptions rather than the rule, and the cruise industry has implemented stringent safety measures and technological advancements to prevent capsizing. Modern cruise ships flaunt a wider hull, which disperses the ship’s weight more effectively across the water’s surface.

It’s easy to forget that these floating cities, with towering structures and thousands of passengers and crew, need to stay upright, even in the face of adverse weather conditions. The key lies in the careful design, weight distribution, and advanced stabilization systems employed by cruise ships. In conclusion, the stability of cruise ships is the result of meticulous planning, careful design, advanced technology, and the expertise of the crew.

Familiarize yourself with the location of the life jackets as soon as you board the ship, so you know exactly where to find them in case of an emergency. Remember, wearing a life jacket is crucial for your safety, especially if you need to abandon the ship. One of the first things you should do in the event of a ship tipping over is to locate your life jacket. Life jackets are typically stored in your cabin, but they can also be found in designated areas throughout the ship. They are trained to handle emergencies and will guide you through the necessary steps to ensure your safety.

Inclement weather can significantly affect a ship’s stability, as high winds, large waves, and heavy rain can all contribute to a vessel’s pitching and rolling. In addition to careful weight distribution, many cruise ships have double-hull construction that provides additional protection if the hull becomes compromised. Ballast is located at the bottom of the ship and can be transferred from side to side to help maintain the ship’s balance. Cruise lines can use seawater or fuel for stability during sailing. The cruise industry hosts over 20 million passengers annually on hundreds of cruise ships.

We break down situations when passengers might or might not remove automatic gratuities. From information on gratuities added to spa and bar bills to the crew members you should never tip, here's everything you need to know about tipping on a cruise in one handy guide. In the event of a mechanical failure, crew members have a plan in place, and many times, as a cruiser, you may never know there was a problem.

can a cruise ship tip over

If you’ve read our article on how cruise ships float, you know that even a large mass, such as a cruise ship, can stay afloat thanks to the principle of buoyancy. When calculating a ship’s center of gravity, the weight of fuel and water that is several tons is also taken into consideration for ballast. Considering the weight of the cargo and the massive size of cruise ships, a whale cannot tip over a cruise ship as the ship moves through the water. The depth a cruise ship can travel in water depends on its density. Ships are designed to be less dense than water which allows them to float. The ship’s draft, which is the portion of the cruise ship underwater, must be considered along with water density to avoid grounding.

It ran aground and capsized off the coast of Italy on January 13, 2012. The ship hit a rock due to negligence of the captain and took on water, causing it to list to one side and eventually capsize. As a cruise ship moves through shallow water, it creates a low-pressure area underneath its hull. This low-pressure area can cause the ship to sink slightly, which can increase its draft and make it more difficult to control.

Today’s cruise ships resemble tiered cakes stacked a few tiers too high. It’s easy to wonder how cruise ships can remain seaworthy when they have a top-heavy appearance. Naval architects take special care to ensure ships remain stable and seaworthy even in bad weather conditions. Additionally, cruise ships have excellent weather prediction technology onboard.

How much to tip on a cruise is a question that trips up many first-timers. That's because some cruise lines tack daily service fees onto passenger bills — yet many travelers still hand out additional cash gratuities, either as a matter of course or for exemplary service. It’s a city in itself with cafes, stores, swimming pools, gyms and a water park. Everything from its impressive size to the number of passengers on board leaves unprepared observers speechless. Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry. Since the start, it's been our aim to provide the latest cruise news covering all the major cruise lines.

While highly advanced weather and storm detection systems mean that cruise ships can easily avoid these situations, the fact they can withstand them means the chances of tipping over are very slim. This is achieved by stabilizers found at the lower half of a cruise ship. These stabilizers counteract the tipping force of the ship caused by the waves. They act like invisible hands that keep the cruise ship’s side from tipping over completely and instead gently pushing it back to the middle and upper side to maintain a gentler buoyancy.

Margaritaville Islander Itinerary, Current Position, Ship Review

costa cruise atlantica

The casual Lido buffet, pizzeria, and 24-hour room service are alternatives to dining room meals. Costa is one of the few cruise lines to continue the seagoing tradition of lavish midnight buffets. Costa Atlantica/Margaritaville Islander cruise ship deck plan shows a total of 1109 staterooms for 2210 passengers (max capacity is 2652) served by 920 crew-staff. The glittering 2-deck Tiziano Restaurant is the main dining venue aboard Costa Atlantica, serving all 3 meals at traditionally fixed sittings.

Costa Atlantica Returns to Southern Europe

The short (4-5-night) voyages depart roundtrip from Shanghai and Shenzhen-Shekou and visit popular destinations in Japan's prefectures Okinawa and Kagoshima, including Miyakojima Island and the Yaeyama Islands (Iriomote-jima, Yonaguni-jima, Taketomi-jima). For Costa Cruises, Costa Atlantica itinerary program was based on seasonal roundtrips from homeport Dubai UAE (8-day itineraries). The ship was also deployed in East Asia with homeporting in Shanghai China and Singapore. One deck down, special effects machines fill the area of dancing with dense, smoky fog. Atlantica's Coral Lounge is placed on the very bottom deck, and is an evocative alternate performance nightclub, carrying the sense of being at the bottom of the ocean.

Europe’s number-one cruise line combines a Continental experience, enticing itineraries, and Italy’s classical design and style with relaxing days and romantic nights at sea. Genoa-based Costa Crociere, parent company of Costa Cruise Lines, had been in the shipping business for more than 100 years and in the passenger business for almost 50 years when it was bought by Airtours and Carnival Corporation in 1997. In 2000 Carnival completed a buyout of the Costa line and began expanding the fleet with larger and more dynamic ships. If you’re visiting Istanbul by cruise ship, we can say that you’ll have about 8 to 12 hours to explore the city. If you will have 12 hours layover, than you can explore the city’s all the best attractions for sure with our guide below.

We Highly Recommend These Fantastic Night-time Activities

In the Caribbean, there is also a theme night on which many passengers wrap themselves in sheets and call them togas. Europeans tend to dress fancier for daytime activities than Americans, so don’t expect not to feel underdressed in cutoffs and a T-shirt on European sailings. That Italy has some of the world’s greatest cuisine should not be taken to mean that Costa serves the world’s best food. At the buffets, you will be presented with what Europeans are used to as “fast food” including beans for breakfast, and cheese, hard sausage and rolls for lunch. The three-deck show lounge is lovely, but even with three decks the sight lines could be better, especially on the flat floor. There is a smaller, secondary show lounge directly beneath it, though, and three other lounges, including “Paparazzi,” which features stills from Fellini films.

A single two-deck-high formal restaurant serves open seating breakfast and lunch, while the Italian-accented cuisine is served in two traditional assigned dinner seatings. An upscale, reservations-only alternative restaurant features Italian specialties—while there is a charge, it’s well worth it for the intimate, candlelit atmosphere and interesting menu selection. Reserved for guests occupying Wellness cabins and suites, a Wellness Restaurant on each ship serves lighter fare at lunch and dinner. Coffee shops serve delightful, authentic Italian specialty coffees and treats.

The basic layout of these contemporary ships is nearly identical to parent Carnival Cruise Line’s Spirit-class vessels. Interiors were designed by Carnival’s ship architect Joe Farcus, whose abundant use of marble reflects Costa’s Italian heritage. Artwork commissioned specifically for each ship was created by contemporary artists and includes intricate sculptures in silver and glass. Don’t overlook the lighting fixtures, which were created especially for the ship, most of them crafted by the artisans in Venice’s Murano-glass factories. “Cruising Italian Style” carries over to the Costa Kids Club, which offers extensive programs for youngsters — and guarantees relaxation for their harried parents.

The majority of the crew come from the Dominican Republic where Costa has established a school to train crew-members. The terminal of the Galatport has areas under the ground and will have a capacity to serve high number of passengers. There will ve passport control and check-in areas, waiting saloons and more. Here you can read our guide and find everything you need to know about Galataport Istanbul (the Cruise Port of Istanbul), including terminals, services, how to get to the city center, nearby attractions and sights with insider advice tips. Costa Atlantica's interior combined Roman, Renaissance, and Baroque styles.

The MDR is longer than wide due to the placement of the ship's galley along the side walls. Choices for seating range from a handful of 2- and 4-tops to a number of bigger tables, including more for 8, or more than it's typical on American cruise ships. With the hard surfaces of the room, the noise level can be prodigious, as tables are placed very close. Though guests may choose a table at breakfast and lunch and don't need to dine at their regular sitting time, Atlantica still maintains formal seating times. The doors are closed a half-hour after the beginning of the first seating and reopened at the regular time for the second seating. Such a schedule is also maintained on port days when the volume is minimal.

Built in 2000, the Costa Atlantica cruise ship weighs 86K tons and has 1105 staterooms for up to 2652 passengers served by 902 crew. You can expect a space ratio of 32 gross tons per passenger on this ship. On this page are the current deck plans for Costa Atlantica showing deck plan layouts, public venues and all the types of cabins including pictures and videos. Costa Atlantica Suites are 3 types – each has a private veranda (with lounge furniture), separate dressing room, large bathroom (bathtub/shower configuration, dual sink, WC /GS-Suites plus bidet).

The nice flow between public lounges is broken only by piazzas, where you can practice the Italian custom of passeggiata (strolling to see and be seen). And there’s plenty to see; these are visually stimulating interiors, with vivid colors and decor elements to arouse a sense of discovery. One of the most elegant spaces on board Costa Atlantica is Café Florian—inspired by the original in Venice’s St. Mark’s Square.

Sailing roundtrip from Shanghai, the 86-day itinerary included visits to 28 destinations in 18 different countries. Handed over to its new owners a few days before the COVID-19 pandemic operational pause in early 2020, the vessel has remained out of revenue service. But behold the exception, the alternative restaurant Club Atlantica, where for around $23 you can not only savor a delicious meal, but also escape the clamor of the main dining room. The misanthropic can stand one deck above at the railing and glare down at the activities below. Daytime activities, mostly geared towards a younger, more active crowd, range from ping-pong tournaments to salsa dance classes to learning how to mix cocktails.

After dinner and a coffee in the coffee bar, on most nights there are performances by the resident production singers and dancers as well as guest entertainers in the main theater. The secondary show lounges feature singers and musicians and are the venues for Costa’s signature parties, during which the entertainment staff encourages passenger participation. There is a quieter and intimate piano bar as well as other lounges with music for dancing and listening as well as a disco. Note also that the ship’s exterior undulates, protruding in places and retracting in others. There is a wide variety of evening activities in at least four different venues.

In the period July-December 2013, the ship was homeported in Shanghai China for 4- and 5-day roundtrips to Japan and South Korea, visiting Fukuoka, Kagoshima, Kobe, Cheju, Busan, Incheon. Costa Asia ships in 2017 also included Fortuna, neoRomantica, Serena and Victoria. The 2000-built (as Costa Atlantica) cruise ship Margaritaville At Sea Islander (aka MAS Islander) is the first of the two SPIRIT-class Costa vessels - together with Costa Mediterranea (2003-launched). In 2020-Q1, Costa Atlantica left Costa Cruises to start operations for the new Chinese company ADORA CRUISES LTD (fka CSSC Carnival China Cruise Shipping Ltd) - officially since January 13, 2020. As the largest European cruise operator, Costa Cruises is able to offer you one of the largest choices of itineraries and ships available today.

Of this class are also the Carnival Cruise Lines ships Legend, Miracle, Pride, and Spirit. Built for Costa Cruises, the 2,100-guest ship served the company’s traditional markets in Europe for nearly 15 years before being repositioned to Asia in mid-2013. Plans for the service restart of the Costa Atlantica and its sister ship Costa Mediterranea – which was also sold to the joint-venture in 2018 – are yet to be confirmed. With a newbuild under construction in Shanghai, the company intends to welcome its first guests in late 2023. Despite the change of ownership, the Atlantica also retained its original name, in addition to Costa’s colors and features. The “must-see” of the ship is the Caffe Florian, which is a near perfect reproduction of the most famous sidewalk cafe in the world (by the same name) residing in the Piazza San Marco in Venice.

Overlooking the 10-deck atrium, the two-deck Club Atlantica, with a crowning skylight and opaque orange/yellow glass surrounding the upper level, serves as the ship’s very attractive alternate restaurant and late night Cigar Bar. The atrium also serves as a public room, and the bar on the lower level is the ship’s social hub. Of Karakoy coastline and can host around 3 cruise ships at once, and 500 cruise ships with an average of 4,000 passengers each throughout the year. The port is also able to host the biggest cruise ships in the world, and what is much interesting is that Galatport is the World’s first underground Cruise Ship Terminal.

The huge, three-story Caruso Theater showroom features a different show or production every night, with everything from magic to flamenco dancers. Piazza Madame Butterfly lounge is filled each night for bingo, and the pool deck is used for themed deck parties. The large, two-deck disco Dante’s is packed until late every night, probably in substantial part because it is fantastically atmospheric; descending the spiral staircase really does feel like entering The Inferno. The reconstruction of new Galataport completed in the last quarter of 2021 and now it serves for the cruise ships, and all travelers in Istanbul. And Istanbul is now one of the major cruising destinations along Mediterranean.

Mercury Poisoning in Dentists: Unraveling the Risks and Safeguarding Dental Health

Do dentists have higher mercury poisoning? This is a question that has been raised due to the use of mercury in dental amalgam, a material used to fill cavities. Mercury is a toxic substance that can have adverse effects on the human body, including damage to the nervous system, kidneys, and immune system.

There is some evidence to suggest that dentists may have higher levels of mercury in their bodies than the general population. A study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine found that dentists had higher levels of mercury in their urine than non-dentists. Another study, published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, found that dentists had higher levels of mercury in their blood than dental assistants and hygienists.
